Images of a Work Collection No. 1: Stèles d’air by Jérôme Combier

Watch the full series of short documentary films “Images of a Work”, initiated by the Education and Cultural Outreach Department of IRCAM, co-produced with the Centre Pompidou. Jérôme Combier chose to entrust his friends, the filmmaker Pierre Nouvel and the writer Sylvain Coher, with offering a singular perspective on the creation of his piece Stèles d’air, which brings to a close the vast cycle “Vies silencieuses.”

Images of a Work Collection No. 5: "Deux Caprices by Luis Naón

Part of the vast Urbana cycle, Deux Caprices for percussion are the last two of a series of six, written for a solo instrument and electronics, commissioned from the composer by Ircam in 2007–2008. The original idea behind this commission was to revisit the genre of the étude, combining compositional ingenuity, technological prowess, and instrumental virtuosity.

Les Temps tiraillés by Myriam Gourfink and Georg Friedrich Haas emerges from the meeting of a choreographic score and a work for two violas, bassoon, and electronics. The two creators explore slowness, stretching, and depth—both of the body and of sound. The music draws inspiration from the figure of the glissando, extended to the extreme; the dance, from an infinite slowing of movement.

Entering Philippe Manoury’s studio means recognizing the persistence of an ongoing inquiry into the interaction between musicians and computer-based systems. This film traces several moments of the composer’s exchanges with computer scientists, researchers, and performers, leading to the creation of a string quartet with electronics in which a “real” quartet and a “synthesized” quartet share musical figures to the point of blurring boundaries.
