Images of a Work No. 15: ‘Assemblage’ by Roque Rivas

The film Images of a Work: Roque Rivas's Concert Piece follows the creation of this piano work, which draws on the legacy of John Cage and explores new musical territory.

For the first time, Roque Rivas has written a piece in the classical concerto form, alternating between fast movements, which he has mastered, and slow movements, which he is exploring as something of a novice. The idea for this concertante form came to him while he was working on the About Cage project based on Cage's famous ‘4'33’', created in the winter of 2011 at the Centre Pompidou with four other guests engaging in a stylistic exercise paying homage to the whimsical composer. Roque Rivas chose to showcase the piano on this occasion, but in contrast to Cage's characteristics (more sonorous than silent). In this new project, Roque Rivas reuses this material but integrates other sources of inspiration, which he gradually reveals in this issue of ‘Images d'une œuvre’. A documentary written and directed by Nicolas Donin and Benoît Martin

Co-production Ircam - Centre Pompidou. First screening: 16 June 2012 at 7.30 p.m., Centre Pompidou
