Images of a Work No. 12: ‘La pierre et l'étang (...les temps...)’ by Ivan Fedele
The film Images of a work: ‘La pierre et l'étang’ by Ivan Fedele follows the genesis of this composition, where childhood memories, instrumental gestures and recording technologies combine to create a sculptural and poetic orchestra.
One could almost see, in the genesis of ‘La pierre et l'étang (...les temps...)’, a Proustian experience: the musical work originates from the memory of a child's game. A very simple game, one that we have all experienced: who has never had fun throwing a stone into the water? Whether thrown en masse, skipping across the surface or raining down like a shower of pebbles, it is these multiple images that inspire Ivan Fedele. A metaphorical tour de force that transforms the orchestra and its soloists into a protean and changing sculpture, the score provides an opportunity to integrate motion capture technologies into the compositional process, extending the musicality of the instrumental gesture and reinforcing both the spectacular and poetic aspects of the orchestral space. A documentary film written and directed by Jérémie Szpirglas and Christian Bahier.
