Director of Innovation and Research Resources

The Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (a non-profit organization) is today one of the world’s largest public research centers dedicated to musical creation and scientific research. A unique hub where artistic foresight converges with scientific and technological innovation, the institute is led by Frank Madlener and brings together more than 160 staff members.

As Deputy Director General, he/she actively contributes to defining and implementing strategic directions to support research and strengthen innovation in fields specific to IRCAM. In this capacity, he/she allocates and oversees IRCAM’s resources dedicated to research, musical research, and tech transfer, and coordinates their technological, artistic, and industrial applications in alignment with the institution’s cultural priorities. He/she thus helps to renew and amplify the essential link between scientific and artistic research. He/she ensures the department’s overall performance by optimizing resources, ensuring the quality of partnerships, and maximizing the impact of initiatives—scientifically, artistically, and economically.

 

As IRCAM’s scientific and technological lead, he/she carries out the following responsibilities:

  • Representation of IRCAM as a supervising institution for the UMR STMS: negotiation of agreements between supervising bodies; participation in oversight bodies; allocation of resources; oversight of lab management (recruitment, mission statements, regular coordination); contribution to reporting to supervising bodies and evaluation committees.
  • Coordination of technological development. Monitoring, in close collaboration with IRCAM’s General Management, of all initiatives that concretely support artistic research and enhance the transfer of innovations and expertise from the laboratory to the artist’s studio.
  • Management of Web and IT Services.
  • Overseeing human and budgetary resources for IRCAM’s research, development, and innovation activities in collaboration with the STMS management and administrative services.
  • Organizing Scientific Advisory boards. 
  • Contributing to project and activity reports.

 

He/She is responsible for steering R&D and innovation projects

  • Negotiation, development, and coordination of research and innovation projects in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
  • Promotion of IRCAM’s expertise within professional networks and a role representing and influencing funders.
  • Allocation, budgeting, and multi-year budget monitoring for all projects, in collaboration with administrative departments and in accordance with applicable regulations; supporting researchers in setting up their projects and managing their budgets. 
  • Supporting the Legal and financial management with financial reporting.

 

He/She is responsible for the tech transfer strategy

  • Supervision of intellectual property management (patents, licenses, dissemination, industrial collaborations).
  • Overseeing the collaboration agreement with the Ircam Amplify subsidiary and its relations with research teams. 
  • Management of the Ircam Forum.
  • Supporting the Legal and financial management in negotiating and monitoring contracts: scientific and industrial collaboration agreements; consortium agreements; licenses and service contracts.

 

  • Excellent knowledge of the state of the art in science and technology of music and sound. Proficiency in deep learning techniques is a plus.
  • PhD in a scientific or technological field related to music and sound science and technology. Specialization in innovation, research management, and intellectual property is an added asset.
  • Significant experience in cross-functional management, particularly in research/technological innovation environments, and/or experience leading a research unit or laboratory.
  • Proven expertise in setting up, managing, and reporting on research and development projects, as well as in negotiating external funding.
  • Solid experience in high-level negotiation, particularly with institutional and industrial partners, in both national and international contexts.
  • Professional experience in the arts, demonstrated through proven collaborations, would be appreciated.
  • Fluent in French (reading, writing, and speaking). Proficiency in office software and English is essential.
