IRCAM’s innovation model is uniquely rooted in musical and sonic creation. Close collaboration between artists and researchers working at the forefront of their fields generates new approaches to sound production, with artistic works often functioning as advanced prototypes. These creative processes drive technological developments that translate singular artistic practices into more general concepts and tools that can be adapted for wider applications.
Industrial collaborations form a significant part of IRCAM’s research activities. These projects explore applications of sound and music across a broad range of sectors, including cultural and creative industries, transportation, luxury, and healthcare, as well as fields involving sound diffusion, multimodal interfaces, and virtual or augmented reality.
Over nearly fifty years, IRCAM has developed extensive experience in connecting scientific research, artistic creation, and industrial innovation. This interdisciplinary model has attracted growing interest as a framework for open innovation across technological sectors. IRCAM was notably one of the key initiators of the European Commission’s S+T+ARTS program.
- Industrial collaborations take several forms:
- Creative software publishing: Max software (Cycling ’74), audio plug-in collections (Flux::, Ableton, Plugivery, IRCAM Forum), the Holophonix spatial audio system (Amadeus), among others.
- Collaborative research and innovation projects supported by national (ANR, France 2030), European (Horizon Europe, Creative Europe, ERC), and international programs — with more than 80 projects conducted over the past decade.
- Co-supervised doctoral research, notably through the CIFRE program (ANRT), with partners including Actronika, Amadeus, Apeira, Bruitparif, IFF, Krug, Kyutai, Meta, Orange, PSA, Renault, Sony CSL, and UVI.
- Research services and consultancy.Technology licensing, primarily in collaboration with IRCAM Amplify.
Founded in 2019, Ircam Amplify, a subsidiary of IRCAM, develops and commercializes expertise and technologies emerging from the laboratory in the form of products and services. Acting as a bridge between cutting-edge audio research and industry worldwide, Ircam Amplify contributes to the evolution of sound in the 21st century. As cultural and creative industries become increasingly strategic for national and European economies, IRCAM’s research and technologies support innovation across a wide range of sectors. IRCAM’s distinctive approach to sound design—integrating both the aesthetic and functional dimensions of sound in everyday environments—also reflects growing recognition in industries such as transportation, luxury, and healthcare that sound plays a central role in human experience.
